Want to start the conversation about a path toward autonomy for Oregon and Washington? Use the templates below to write a letter to the editor in your local news publication. Media outlets prefer original letters, so make this your own. Let them know how you’ve personally affected by the Trump regime, and why you support increased autonomy for Cascadia.

Most publications limit letters to fewer than 200 words, so choose your thoughts carefully. Be concise, opinionated, and make sure your facts are correct! And send us an email at [email protected] if your letter gets published!

Letter to the editor, Washington (less than 200 words)

Dear Editor:

President Trump has made it clear he wants to be an authoritarian ruler. Many of his unconstitutional actions have been especially bad for the Pacific Northwest.

Trump illegally raised tariffs, costing Washington $2.5 billion.

Trump’s mass deportation campaign has led to the abduction of more than 1,000 residents of Washington.

The feds recently destroyed the U.S. Forest Service by slashing staff, closing the regional Pacific Northwest office, and cutting trail funding by 64%.

And Trump proposes wasting $1.5 trillion on military spending.

Each year, Washington pays $55 billion more in federal taxes than we receive back in funding and services. We should be spending that money locally on health care and education.

Enough is enough. It’s time to talk about Cascadia independence. If Washington and Oregon became an independent nation, we’d have a GDP on the scale of the Netherlands.

We can take steps toward “soft secession” now. The Washington legislature should pass a bill withholding money owed to the federal government if Trump withholds appropriated money from us.

If things continue to descend into fascism in the United States, Cascadia should start working on an exit plan, and that means peacefully moving toward independence.

Sincerely,
